Our anticipation for September 1st is huge, when the new GGs finally hit the market (and our glasses).
But before the wines with the coveted VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® label enter the market, they still have one more "coveted" hurdle to clear: the "Vorpremiere (Sneakpreview) VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS®" in Wiesbaden, where top international and national tasters from renowned wine publications, the trade, and top restaurants will come together for three days for an intense & exclusive tasting and evaluation of the new vintage.
We are looking forward to three exciting days in Wiesbaden and a reunion with numerous tasters from all over the world!

THE VDP'S TOP DRY WINES
CELEBRATE THEIR VINTAGE DEBUT |
|
At the Vorpremiere VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS®, the wines are served at their ideal temperature, in the correct sequence, and brought by order to the taster’s spot. They are organized by origin, allowing wines from the same site to be tasted side by side across different estates. The VDP pioneered a procedure that has since drawn numerous international imitators: each individual bottle is pre-tasted by wine professionals prior to serving. 46 refrigerators have been set up to keep this year’s 83 flights of approx. 460 GGs cool before delivery to the tasters’ tables. 50 servers have been engaged to tend to the needs of the roughly 200 tasters from 25 different countries.

20 YEARS OF VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® –
A SUCCESS STORY |
|
One year ago, the anniversary of 20 years of VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® was celebrated – a celebration with the German Grand Crus of the last two decades and an emotional look back to the early days of this success story. The VDP is proud of the more than 30 years of classification experience as well as 20 years of VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS®. Above all, today, many years later, it can be stated with conviction that all the abandonment, the discussions and the individual intermediate steps as well as milestones were important for the current success of the wines of the VDP. But all this does not mean that the goal of the long way has been reached.
It is precisely the return to what made the VDP great as a pioneer of Premier Crus and Grand Crus in Germany that has made it possible to conduct the sometimes very difficult discussions of the past months due to the planned adjustments of the wine regulation with reason and patience. The review of the own classification history in the course of the anniversary, but also the exchange with the neighbors from France and Austria as well as the wine law developments strengthened the internal questioning process and the determination to take the next step together in the VDP. |

It was in 2002 that the VDP launched the VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® in Berlin for Germany. A milestone for the association and the origin classification of great wines in Germany.

|
Being aware that everything is always in a state of transition, the VDP is now moving on to the next stage in the classification of vineyards. Previous criteria and documentation, which were aimed at the first classification of vineyards are now being reviewed, summarised and supplemented with knowledge gained in the last years. This leads to a more multidimensional and transparent documentation of the classification, but also to a somewhat different perspective:
It is about which vineyard has demonstrated that it has potential (proven reputation) – and not about what potential a vineyard might have (pure potential assessment of the conditions). In this way, the potential of the vineyard is combined with the skills of the winegrower to form a unity. |
